The World Water Day is celebrated every year to draw attention to the importance of freshwater, and the need for sustainable management of this critical resource for life.


The World Water Day marks from 22 March 1993, when it was approved by the General Assembly United Nations .

Each year, this day emphasis on some specific aspect. World Water Day 2011 has been devoted to the theme: Water for cities : responding to the urban challenge.

Thus, the World Water Day 2011, calls for international attention especially on the impact it has on the water the rapid growth of cities, coupled with other issues such as climate change, conflict war and natural disasters.

Some facts to consider:

  • For the first time in human history, most of the population lives in cities. Currently more than 3,300 million people.
  • The world population is growing at a rate of 2 people every second.
  • Almost 40% of urban growth occurs in slums. The population is growing much faster than the adaptation of infrastructure.
  • 493 million people buy their sanitation facilities, compared to 295 million they did in 1990.
  • 827.6 million of people living in slums, often without safe water and sanitation.
  • The lack of drinking water often leads frequently in diseases such as cholera, malaria or dysentery.
  • Every second, the world's population increases by 2 people. The world population of cities is increased by 5 million new residents every month.
  • 95% of urban population growth in coming decades will take place in the developing world.
