CSR - International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

Message from the Secretary General Ba Ki-moon on the International Day for Elimination of Racial Discrimination. March 21, 2011.

Every year the world commemorates the anniversary of the massacre Sharpville 1960, in which dozens of peaceful demonstrators were shot dead by police in apartheid South Africa just to protest against the laws discrimination based on race.

This year's International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is dedicated to combating discrimination that are the subject of African descent. We have chosen this theme to reflect the proclamation by the General Assembly of the United Nations of 2011 as International Year of African Descent.

discrimination that are the subject of African descent is pernicious. They are often trapped in poverty largely because of intolerance, and above poverty is used as a pretext to exclude them even more. Often lack access to education because of prejudice, and then submits its statement as insufficient reason to deny them jobs. These and other fundamental injustices have a long and terrible history, including the transatlantic slave trade, whose consequences are still felt today.

a decade ago in Durban, the World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance adopted a program to combat racism with broad vision and which figured prominently encouraging full participation in society of African descent. The International Year offers the opportunity to progress in that fight and to recognize the vast contributions made by people of African descent in the political, economic, social and cultural development of all our societies.

To defeat racism we must end public policy and private attitudes that perpetuate it. On this International Day, I appeal to Member States, international organizations and NGOs, media, civil society and all people to participate actively in promoting the International Year of African descent and jointly combat racism when and where it arises.
